Scholarships

Doshisha University offers a variety of scholarships to enable international students to concentrate on their studies free from financial concerns.

Students enrolled in and after the Academic Year 2011

1. Doshisha University Reduced Tuition for Self-Funded International Students
(The Admission Fee, Fee for Educational Support, Lab/Practical Fees, and Fees for Academic Associations are not included)

●Doshisha University Graduate School Reduced Tuition Special Scholarships for Self-Funded International Students

Amount of Scholarship/Number of Recipients:
 Equivalent to full amount of tuition/ from 20 to 30% of international students

●Doshisha University Reduced Tuition Scholarships for Self-Funded International Students

Amount of Scholarship/Number of Recipients:

 ・Equivalent to 50% of tuition/ from 30 to 40% of international students
 ・Equivalent to 30% of tuition/ approximately 40% of international students

<Undergraduate Students>
●Doshisha University Reduced Tuition Scholarships for Self-Funded International Students

Amount of Scholarship/Number of Recipients:
 ・Equivalent to 50% of tuition/approximately 30% of international students
 ・Equivalent to 30% of tuition/approximately 30% of international students
 ・Equivalent to 20% of tuition/approximately 40% of international students

 *The reduction rate is determined by entrance examination results.

[Common Subject Matter]

Eligible Applicants

 (1)Those who have passed the entrance examination for international students and hold a
   “College Student” visa.
 (2)Those who have passed the entrance examination for international students and hold a
   “Permanent Resident”, “Long-Term Resident”, “Spouse or Child of Japanese National” or
   “Spouse or Child of Permanent Resident” visa.
 (3)Those who are enrolled in Doshisha University, regardless of type of entrance examination,
   and who hold a “College Student” visa.(*applicants’eligibility will be preliminarily screened.)

Duration of Scholarship

Two years after admission (renewable for up to the standard number of years required for graduation in students who meet certain standards of academic performance). In being renewed, the reduction rate may be changed depending on academic performance.

*The scholarship might be withdrawn if beneficiaries are determined to be inappropriate as recipients by the deans of the graduate schools.
*Otherwise, recipients shall receive the same tuition reduction rates as they received upon admission.

Undergraduate Students

*To be made based on academic performance by the end of the second year of study.
*International students whose GPA is less than or equal to 1.50 or whose earned credit are less than or equal to half of the upper limit on the number of registered credits are not eligible to renew their scholarships.

※The duration of the scholarship is up to the standard number of years required for graduation. (However, time taken off for military leave is excluded.)

[Notes]

1) The students who take a leave of absence are ranked lower than the others.
2) As a rule, the period of leave of absence is included in the duration of scholarship. However,
  this shall not apply to a military leave.
3) As a rule, recipients are not able to receive other scholarships for tuition at the same time.
4) Doesn’t apply to the recipients of “Doshisha University Graduate School Scholarships for
  Young Doctoral Students/Researchers”, “Doshisha University Graduate School of Brain
  Scinece Special Scholarships” and “Doshisha University Undergraduate School International
  Students Course Scholarships”
5) Renewal conditions for International students from designated schools overseas who have
  been admitted by the admission-on-recommendation system and special recommendation
  system in collaboration between the Fuculty of Letters, Doshisha University and designated
  foreign-language high schools shall be specified separately.

2. Scholarship for Students from Developing Countries.

The scholarship for applicants from developing countries is for undergraduate students who pass the Entrance Examination for international students (ExamⅠ).

◆Eligible Applicants:
Applicants must fulfill the following two conditions:

    (1) Applicants who admit to Doshisha University through international student entrance admission system and hold or will hold “College Student” Visa.
    (2) The applicants must reside in one of the countries classified as “Least Developed Countries” or “Other Low Income Countries” in the list of ODA Recipients published by OECD/DAC and hold the nationality of one of those countries. The applicants who have multiple nationalities are eligible if all nationalities are specified in the list of ODA Recipients published by OECD/DAC.

◆Method of Selection:
Applicants are determined in accordance with the standards specified by Doshisha University.
(Only successful applicant of this scholarship will receive the result of selection with the result of admission.)

◆Duration of Scholarship:
For two years after admission
The duration of scholarship may be renewed for up to 4 years.
In principle, the period of leave of absence is included in the duration of scholarship. However this shall not apply to military leave.

◆Amount of Scholarship:
(1) 85,000 yen per month
(2) The admission fee, tuition, fee for Educational Support, Lab/Practical fees, and other fee are included.

◆Number of Recipients:
2 students per year (One from each semester’s entry)

◆Procedure:
When you submit application form of admission, please submit the application form of “The Doshisha University Scholarship for Students from developing Countries (Our official application form)”.

◆Notes
*Recipients of this scholarship cannot receive any other scholarship in Doshisha University.
*Only those who apply for admission (Exam Ⅰ) are eligible to apply.
*Those who apply for admission (Exam Ⅱ) are NOT eligible to apply.

Students enrolled before the academic year 2011
(1) Doshisha University Special Scholarship for International Students Paying Their Own Tuition

*Applicants must apply for this scholarship when applying for admission to Doshisha University.

Type Special Scholarship A Special Scholarship B
Value of Scholarship An amount equal to a sum of regular tuition, fee for educational support, and lab/practical fees An amount equal to HALF the sum of regular tuition fee for educational support, and lab/practical fees
The entire scholarship amount will be applied directly to tuition fee payments.
Special Scholarships A and B are inclusive of any subsidies paid under the tuition reduction schemes operated by Doshisha University.
Who may apply

Any individual who:

・ has an excellent academic record and strong motivation to enter Doshisha University as a regular undergraduate or graduate degree student, and who would have difficulty meeting university expenses independently; and

・ will, after admission, obtain a “College Student” visa and be eligible to apply for the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT) Tuition Fee Reduction scheme;and

・ will NOT apply for Graduate School of Business.

Any individual who:

・ Has an excellent academic record and strong motivation to enter Doshisha University as a regular undergraduate degree student, and who would have difficulty meeting university expenses independently; and

・ will, after admission, obtain a “College Student” visa and be eligible to apply for the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT) Tuition Fee Reduction scheme.

Duration of scholarship

One year

*On the basis of a review of academic performance and other factors, it may be possible to renew the scholarship annually up to a maximum period equal to the standard number of years required for graduation, as specified below.

- Undergraduate: 4 years (2 years for 3rd year transfer students)
- Graduate School Master’s program: 2 years
- Graduate School Doctoral program: 3 years

How to apply :
Submit prescribed attached to “the application guideline for Doshisha University Special Scholarship for International Students Paying Their Own Tuition” enclosed in an admissions guide to the Office of International Education.

Selection :
Applicants will be screened in accordance with criteria set by Doshisha University. Only the recipients of the scholarship will be contacted and informed directly.

※Recipients cannot apply for the “Doshisha University International Student Scholarship” or the “Doshisha University Graduate Student Scholarship” administered through the Student Support Services Department.

(2) Reduced Tuition for Doshisha University International Students Paying Their Own Tuition

Who may apply:
Regular students holding a “College Student” visa whose tuition fees are privately financed.

Eligibility for reduction:
Applicants who fulfill the “Selection Criteria for Reduced Tuition for Privately Financed International Students”.

Reduction planned to be for offered academic year 2010:
will be 30% of regular tuition

(3) Doshisha University International Student Subsidy

Who may apply:
Students who hold a “College Student” visa and have submitted the “Doshisha University Privately Financed International Student Scholarships Applicant Registration Form.”

Selection:
To be determined following screening by the Academic Affairs [International] Department Heads’ Liaison Meeting.

Duration of scholarship:
One year

Value of scholarship:
40,000 yen per month

Number of recipients:
Up to 25 per year

All students
(1) Doshisha University Doctoral-Program Young Researcher Scholarship (Outline)

This purpose of this newly established scholarship is to support young researchers who hold future promise and display a strong passion toward academic research. The scholarship covers doctoral program school fees and is in principle awarded to all qualified students in each graduate school unless these exceed scholarship availability. The scholarship is awarded on the basis of recommendations from the graduate schools and cannot be applied for individually.

Scholarship Type:
Non-repayable scholarship

Scholarship Amount:
Amount equivalent to annual school fees (including admission fees at time of enrollment, tuition, fee for educational support, and Lab/Practical fees).

Award period:
The scholarship is awarded for a period of one year. However, the award period may be extended based on screening and provided it does not exceed the standard program duration. Note that the award period will be temporarily suspended during leaves of absence. * The Leave of Absence Fee must be borne by the recipients.

Eligible students:
Students with a passion for academic research who have received a recommendation from one of the graduate schools and match one of the following profiles.
-Students enrolled in doctoral programs at the Graduate School of Theology, the Graduate
  School of Letters, the Graduate School of Social Studies, the Graduate School of Law, the
  Graduate School of Economics, the Graduate School of Commerce, the Graduate School of
  Policy and Management, Graduate School of Culture and Information Science, the Graduate
  School of Engineering, the Graduate School of Life and Medical Sciences, the Graduate
  School  of Health and Sports Science (pending approval), the Graduate School of Psychology,
  and the  Graduate School of Global Studies, who are aiming to acquire a doctoral degree, and
  were under  34 years of age at the time of admission.
-Students enrolled in an integrated program (master’s program and doctoral program) (except
  at the Graduate School of Brain Science) for a minimum of two years, who are aiming to
  acquire  a doctoral degree, and were under 32 years of age at the time of enrollment.

Note: Where age is specified as a condition, it refers to the age on 1 April of the applicable year of admission.

(2) Doshisha University Graduate School Scholarship

Who may apply:
Graduate students (Regular Students)

※Law School and Business School students may not apply. In addition, students who have been enrolled at school longer than the standard number of years for course completion (a leave of absence is not counted as) may not apply.

※International students selected to receive one of the following scholarships may not apply for this scholarship. (It is not possible to receive both simultaneously)

・ Japanese Government (MEXT) Scholarship

・ Doshisha University Special Scholarship for International Students Paying Their Own Tuition (Special Scholarship A or B)

Duration of scholarship:
One year (Students can apply for this scholarship every year.)

Value of scholarship:
An amount equal to one half the total annual tuition fees

Screening:
Based on recommendations from each Graduate School

(3) Doshisha University Undergraduate Awards for Distinction

Who may apply:
Regular Students enrolled in undergraduate programs

Value of scholarship:
300,000 yen

Number of recipients:
100 students across all Faculties

Scholarships offered by other organizations

Self-funded students who are willing to apply for other scholarships must submit “Doshisha University Privately Financed International Student Scholarships Applicant Registration form”, hereinafter called “Registration Form”, to the office of international students at the beginning of the new academic year. (The form is available on the Office of International Students both in Imadegawa and Kyotanabe campus.)

1. University recommendation

Based on conditions determined by scholarship founders, Doshisha University selects some students as nominee for the scholarships and consults them if they are willing to apply for the scholarship. If the university and the students agree to apply, necessary documents are sent to a scholarship founder through the university.

2. Open application and University recommendation

Information on scholarships are posted on the bulletin board and updated on the Doshisha University website. Students must apply for the University to be candidate for the scholarship. Then the university selects some students as nominee from applicants based on conditions determined by scholarship founders.

※As information on “Registration Form” is important to make a decision on the selection of students as nominee for scholarships, please specifically write the reason and learning plans for application.

3. Open application

Information on scholarships are posted on the bulletin board and updated on the Doshisha University website.
Students who meet the conditions provided by the founder/organization can apply for the scholarship program by themselves. It does not have to be processed through the Office of International students.
